Day One Results
LEXINGTON, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's track & field team sits in first place after day one of the Big South Conference Championship Meet hosted by VMI.
Coastal received All-Big South efforts from four individuals to propel the Chants to 43 team points. Charleston Southern holds second place after the completion of four events with 25 team points. Gardner-Webb (21 points), defending champion Liberty (19 points) and High Point (16 points) round out the top five.
Jason Flanagan started the Chants' impressive day with a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 69.04m (226-06). Flanagan's throw was one of three to surpass the previous facility record of 61.34m (201-03). Finishing fifth in the event was Bryan Fill with a throw of 59.06m (193-09) followed by Chris Tillotson in seventh (55.93m/183-06).
The long jump turned out to be the surprise event of the day as neither of Liberty's past conference champions advanced to the finals, while Coastal claimed valuable team points by having three athletes place in the top four. Freshman Tyler Askew set his collegiate best with a leap of 7.18m (23-06.75) to place third and earn a place on the all-conference squad. Raheen Frederick and Burton Jones tied for fourth with identical final jumps of 7.07m (23-02.50).
Freshman Charlie Tidwell earned his first all-conference honor with a throw of 57.32m (188-01) in the hammer.
Kyle Kling, a junior, finished second in the 10,000 meter run to claim Coastal's final All-Big South performance of the day. Kling crossed the finish line in 31:17.35.
