CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's track & field team swept the throws at the Chanticleer Classic on Friday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina Track & Field Complex.
Freshman Charlie Tidwell completed the trifecta as he won the discus, hammer throw and shot put. Tidwell led off the afternoon with a 44.35m (145-06) throw in the discus to win the event by two feet. He then threw for 58.18m (190-10) in the hammer and capped his day with a persona-best 14.80m (48-06.75) in the shot.
Tyler Swanson and Cameron Griggs also turned in solid days for the Chanticleers as each placed in the top six of both the hammer and shot put. Swanson placed fourth in the hammer with a heave of 47.59m (156-02) as Griggs finished sixth with a distance of 43.30m (412-01). The shot put saw Griggs place second with a personal-best put of 14.65m (48-00.75) while Swanson completed the podium sweep for the Chants with a throw of 13.28m (43-07.00).
Tyler Slapikas, a freshman, claimed his first collegiate event win with an impressive distance of 52.96m (173-09) in the javelin. Slapikas' throw was a full five meets better than his closest competitor.
In the track events, Kyle Kling finished second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:58.26 a mere .04 second behind winner Pardon Ndhlovu of UNC-Pembroke. Cameron Wells was third in the event crossing the finish line in 4:04.64 followed by Rob Delviscio in sixth with a 4:13.31.
Prior to the track events getting underway, Coastal Carolina honored its seniors for their accomplishments and contributions to Chanticleer track & field.
Up next, the Chanticleers will travel to Lexington, Va. to compete in the 2011 Men's Big South Outdoor Tack & Field Championship. The meet will begin on Thursday, April 21 and conclude on Saturday, April 23.
