CONWAY, S.C.- Coastal Carolina University men's track and field team had a successful first day of the annual Coastal Carolina Invitational on Friday, March 12.
Highlighting the day was sophomore Jason Flanagan winning the javelin and throwing a career-best for the second week in a row with a throw of 217'8" (66.35 meters). Also in the javelin, freshman Chris Tillotson threw for 177'10" (54.21 meters), good for 10th place in the event.
The Chants continued their success in the 3000 meters, as sophomore Kyle Kling broke his own school record from the CCU Invitational last year and placed in third with a time of 8:33.15. Senior Ryan Caputo followed Kling in 17th with a time of 9:14.54.
In the hammer throw, sophomore Jason Jensen earned fifth place with a throw of 182'1" (55.50 meters), while sophomore Tyler Swanson threw a personal-best 156'1" (47.58 meters) for 15th place in the event. Senior CJ Smiley and sophomore Derrick El Nou-Nou threw 142'1" (43.31 meters) and 130'4" (39.72 meters), respectively.
The 4x800-meter relay team of senior Jamie McCarthy, freshman Jarod Williams, senior John Heron and junior Christian Mendez ran a time of 7:58.39, placing sixth.
The Chanticleers will continue to compete in Day Two of the Invitational on Saturday, March 13, starting with the men's and women's discus at 9 a.m.
