Coastal Carolina University men’s track and field won the Battle of the Beaches VI over UNC Wilmington 105-103 on Saturday, March 6 at the Coastal Carolina Track. The series between the two schools is tied up for three apiece. The Chanticleers also defeated The Citadel 133-50 and Slippery Rock 132-48.

The Chanticleers clinched the win with Max Hacker and Kyle Kling taking first and second in the 3000 meters, respectively. Hacker ran a personal-best 8:50.95 and Kling followed with 8:51.59. The Chants also were spurred when they swept the top three spots in the high jump and triple jump. In the high jump Jacques Watson won with a jump of 7’0.50”, breaking a meet record. Ross Graves jumped 6’6.75” and Jerry Ntumba followed clearing 6’4.75”. In the triple jump, Chad Phillips cleared a mark of 47’1.50” to win the event. Placing fourth was Ntumba with a jump of 43’5.75”.

The Chanticleers continued a successful meet in the field events as Jason Jensen who won the hammer throw with a mark of 189’6”, while Tyler Swanson placed third in the event with a throw of 147’1”. Jensen continued a good day by placing third in the shot put with a throw of 45’2.5”.  In the javelin, Jason Flanagan threw a personal best by 17 feet with a toss of 212'10" ranking No. 2 all-time at Coastal. Chris Tillotson finished behind Flanagan with a throw of 177’9”. Also in the field events, Ryan Edlich jumped 21’11.5”, placing second in the long jump. Watson also participated in the long jump and placed third by leaping 21’8”, and Burton Jones finished fourth with a leap of 21’1.5”. In the discus throw, CJ Smiley threw 140’7”, placing fourth.

In the track events, Jack Hutchison won the 110-meter hurdles in true style by setting a school and meet record with a time of 14:29. Also setting a meet record with a personal-best was Edlich in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.80. Christopher Lawson also placed third in the 200 meter at 22.02. John Heron won the Steeplechase ran for a time of 9:44.11.  In the 1500-meter run Kling placed second with a time of 4:06.04. In the 400 meters, Stevie Brunson ran a personal best, finishing third with a time of 49.92. Leonard Steed also ran a personal-best, taking second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.76, while Edlich followed in third place with a time of 10.79. In the 800-meter dash, Jarod Williams ran his first meet, taking third with a time of 1:58.60. Jacob Scheuer ran and finished in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.41, as Hutchison finished third at 56.68.

The Chanticleer relays were also fairly successful as the “A” team of Lawson, Edlich, Corey Jameson and Steed finished second with a time of 41.80 in the 4x100 relay. In the 4x400 relay, the “A” team of Darren Tymczak, Scheuer, Shane Norris and Brunson finished third with a time of 3:23.61.

The Chanticleers will continue its home swing on Friday and Saturday March 12-13 for the annual Coastal Carolina Invitational.
