UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Coastal Carolina men’s track and field team finished ninth with six top-10 finishers in a highly competitive Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Jason Jensen highlighted the first day by winning the weight throw, clearing a mark of 61’11”. Jensen beat his personal-best by nearly four feet. In the 60-meter hurdles, Jack Hutchison tied for third place with a time of 8.24. Kyle Kling set a school record in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:34.58, finishing in 12th place.
On the first day of competition, the Chanticleers finished the first day in sixth place out of 12 schools, ahead of Liberty, Penn State, and UNC Wilmington.
The Chanticleers’ distance relay team of John Heron, Travis Owens, Stevie Brunson and Kyle Kling took fifth place with a 10:20.95 on the first day. Leonard Steed was a top finisher in 19th for Coastal in the 60-meter dash preliminaries at 7.06. Following him was Ryan Edlich at 7:14 and Jack Hutchison at 7:17. Max Hacker finished the day in 14th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:30.69.
On the second day of competition, Jacques Watson placed second in the high jump, clearing 7’1.75”. Ross Graves placed ninth in the event, hitting a 6’6.25” jump. Graves continued a good showing, placing 14th in the long jump with a leap of 21’00.75”, and Edlich tied for 19th with a jump of 20’.9’. Burton Jones led the Chants in the triple jump, placing sixth, 46’11’. Jenson threw for a 45’11.75’in the shot put. In the 200-meter dash Edlich and Alex Levy tied in 17th place with a time of 22.61, and Steed followed with a time of 22.78. Jacob Scheuer finished with a time of 50.92 in 22nd place in the 400-meter dash, and Darren Tymczak followed in 25th place with a time of 51.45. In the 600-meter run, Brunson placed 11th, running for a 1:22.70. Owens followed Brunson at 1:23.64.
The Chanticleers will conclude the indoor season in Clemson, S.C., at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 12 and 13.
