DURHAM, N.C. – Four Coastal Carolina men’s tennis players won their respective singles match and advanced to the second round Friday on the second day of the ITA Carolinas Regional from either Duke University or the University of North Carolina.

Freshman Leo Christofides won his match by defeating Jake Bowling of South Carolina 6-3, 6-1.  Christofides will face No. 12 seed Chris Mengel of Duke Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. from Duke. 

Senior Matt Gordon posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Josh Cook of The Citadel to reach the round of 64.  Gordon is schedule to take on Guy Kubi of Winthrop Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from Duke.

Senior Alex Funkhouser also advanced on Friday by defeating Liran Levy of Winthrop 6-0, 6-0.  Funkhouser will matchup with Tripp Carleton of Wake Forest Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from North Carolina.

Sophomore Yusuke Kusuda earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Phillip Kloc of Appalachian State and will take on Brennan Boyajian of North Carolina Saturday at 11:30 a.m. from North Carolina. 

“Intensity is so important at this level and we really came out firing today,” Coastal Carolina head coach Chris Powers said.  “We play a lot of seeded players tomorrow, but hopefully we will battle as a team like we did today.”
