DURHAM, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team had two of its doubles teams reach the round of 32, but ultimately were eliminated thereafter on the first day of the ITA-USTA 2010 Carolinas Regional from the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Freshman Leo Christofides and Yusuke Kusuda won their first match in the opening round with an 8-3 victory over James Atkinson and Dillon Berkabile of The Citadel. The Chanticleer duo fell 8-0 in the following round to Chase Helpingstine and Philip Nemec of Elon.
Ninth-seeded Peter Billingham and Matt Gordon turned in an 8-4 win over Amogh Prabhakar and Conner Sherwood of Wake Forest. Billingham and Gordon were then upset 8-3 in the round of 32 by North Carolina’s Cameron Ahari and Alex Rafiee.
In the other Chanticleer doubles match of the day, Alex Funkhouser and Dorian Sovic dropped an 8-6 decision to Calum Gee and Joe Schafer of Davidson.
The ITA-USTA 2010 Carolinas Regional resumes Friday with the beginning of singles competition.
