Men's Tennis Wins Two Titles at the Sergio Tacchini Invitational

NORFOLK, VA. -- Two doubles titles for the Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team highlighted the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 10-12) hosted by Old Dominion.

Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes) and German Perez (Valencia, Spain/Collegio Helios (UALR)) won the A-1 doubles flight, while Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) and Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) took home the B-2 doubles flight title. The Chants finished 15-9 overall in singles and 5-2 in doubles action.

"I feel good about the weekend as a whole, but we have some areas to improve," Head Coach Chris Powers commented. "We have the ability to accomplish a lot this year, but it is a process."

All doubles action took place Friday, Oct. 10 where Ramos and Perez defeated UMBC's Freidi Voorman and Nick Savage-Pollack 8-6 in the A-1 Flight final. Vlaskin and Tzvetkov defeated UMBC duo Logan Bricker and Jon Dixon 8-5 in the B-2 Flight final.

Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) and Jon Hariston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) fell in the semifinal of the A-2 doubles Flight.

In singles play, Tzvetkov played a tight match in the B-1 Flight, but fell to Alex Funkhouser (ODU) 7-6, 7-6 in the final of the B-1. Sophomore Dorian Sovic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazisa (UALR)) and Vlaskin fell in their semifinal matches, while senior Joseph Withers bowed out in the quarterfinals of the B-3 Flight,

"We have to get our mentally tougher in the close matches and convert the chances that champions aren't afraid to take on the important points," Powers said."This approach is especially important on the big stage coming up at the regional this week."

Coastal Carolina compiled a 48-24 overall record during fall play and looks ahead to the ITA Mideast Regional being held in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament is slated for Oct. 16-20, and will be the final tournament for the Chanticleers this fall.
