ELON, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team had three individuals advance in singles on the first day of the Elon Invitational Friday from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Senior Dorian Sovic advanced to the second round of the B1 flight following a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Brian Coxton of Winston-Salem State.  Sovic will face Bryan Swartz of Tennessee Saturday at 11 a.m.

Fellow senior Peter Billingham knocked off James Jones of Campbell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to qualify for the next round.  Billingham will play Zack Reese of UNC Greensboro Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Freshman Leo Christofides earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over UNC Greensboro’s Jimmy Rouche to earn a spot in the next round.  Christofides is scheduled to take on Hunter Barnes of Longwood Saturday at 1 p.m.

Yusuke Kusuda and Alex Funkhouser lost their matches, but will have an opportunity to compete in the backdraw that starts Saturday. 

The Chants were unable to replicate the success in doubles, as Coastal fell in all three of its matches.  Funkhouser & Billingham dropped an 8-6 decision to Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell of Elon in the A1 flight.  The duo, however, will face Edio Castanhel and Matthijs Verdam of Georgia Southern in the backdraw Saturday at 8 a.m.

The match between Matt Gordon and Sovic and Chris Cooprider and Alex Wetherell of UNC Wilmington failed to finish due to injury.  Cooprider and Wetherell, however, advanced to the next round after holding the lead at the time the match was stopped.  Gordon and Suvic will not play again until Sunday.

Christofides and Kusuda were defeated 8-5 by the Campbell duo of Ondrej Kralik and David Clavera in the B2 flight.  Christofides and Kusuda will take on a team from Winston-Salem State Saturday at 8 a.m.
