Men's Tennis Results from Planet Hollywood/Chanticleer Classic

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's tennis team and head coach Chris Powers hosted its first home fall tournament of the season on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center and posted an overall record of 11-5 on the day.

In the Alpha (Singles) round Dennis Myers (UNC Wilmington) defeated Coastal's David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) 6-4, 6-3. Also in the Alpha (Singles) round sophomore James Eason (Citadel) beat CCU's Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) 6-3, 6-2.

In the Beta (Singles) round junior Grant Holland (UNC Wilmington) won over Coastal's Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) 7-5, 6-2. Also in the Beta (Singles) round junior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado) downed David Lara (Citadel) 6-3, 6-3.

In the Gamma (Singles) round freshman Brian Ford (UNC Wilmington) defeated the Chanticleeer's Brian Dowis (Yorktown, Va./York) 7-5, 6-1. Coastal's Richard Redding (Winscombie, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hopsital) beat Derek Jose (Citadel) 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.

In the Delta (Singles) flight Ryan Weisband (Pittsburg, Pa./Fox Chapel) won over Moody (Citadel) 6-0, 6-0. Also in the Delta singles action CCU's Ryan Vrba (Alqonquin, Ill./Jacobs) was the victor over Seth Johnson (UNC Wilmington) 6-4, 7-6.

In Alpha doubles action Quibell/Redding (CCU) downed Medica/Lara (Citadel) 8-5 and Holland/Myers (UNC Wilmington) 8-3. In the other Alpha doubles Taylor/Caress (CCU) were downed by Piacentini/Meloni (UNC Wilmington) 8-5 and defeated Medica/Lara (Citadel) 8-1.

In Beta doubles Weisband/Dowis (CCU) downed Kotwall/Johnson (UNC Wilmington) 8-4 and Moody/King (Citadel) 8-1. In the other Beta doubles Vrba/Mellis (CCU) defeated Moody/King (Citadel) 8-5 and Ford/Paul (UNC Wilmington) 8-5.

"The guys played well today." Coach Powers said, " We demonstrated team pride on the doubles court, and I believe we've gotten back on the horse. We need to come out big tommorrow though, to call the tournament a success."

Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team continues its play in the Planet Hollywood/Coastal Carolina Challenge starting Sept. 30 at 9 a.m.
