Men's Tennis Gets First Win Over Francis Marion Since 1992

CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina men's tennis earned its first win over Francis Marion since 1992 on Friday at the Hidden Double Dual at Billy Nichols Tennis Center and Joseph Holiday Courts, Sept. 28. Coastal and Francis Marion split the matches with the Patriots winning Friday morning's match 6-4 and the Chanticleers taking the afternoon match 6-3.  Coastal outscored the Patriots 11-9 in the doubleheader.

"This was a great competition today," Head Coach Chris Powers said. "Francis Marion jumped on us early, but we came threw together as a team to pull out the win. We definitely showed our youth at points, but we're getting tougher every week. We came to build on today."

Sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) was the only Chanticleer to come away 2-0 in singles action. Vlaskin played at No. 1 singles, defeating Franklyn Emmanuel 6-4, 6-4 in the morning match and then Oshada Wijemanne 6-2, 1-0 ret. in the afternoon. Junior Christopher Ross-da Silva (Estoril, Portugal/ADLC Online (Limestone)) and freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilla, Brazil/Galois) both went 1-0, with wins in the afternoon and morning matches, respectively. Junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)), sophomore Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) were all 1-1 in singles play.

In doubles action, Francis Marion won the doubles point in the morning's match by sweeping all three games. Coastal took the doubles point in the afternoon's match by winning all three doubles games.

The Chanticleers return to action Oct. 12-14 when they participate in the University of South Carolina Invitational.
