CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina Men's Tennis team went 7-2 Thursday at the 2nd Annual Courtyard by the Marriott Fall Shootout after the weather delayed play.
In Flight 1 Singles, Campbell's Gabriel Delarue defeated Coastal's David Mellis (London, England/Goffs), 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 and UNCW's Caio Piacentini defeated The Citadel's Alberto Diaz, 6-1, 6-3.
In Flight 2 Singles, Grant Holland from UNCW defeated Campbell's Artoym Starkov 7-6, 6-1 while Chanticleer senior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) got the win over The Citadel's Derek Jose, 6-1, 6-2.
UNCW's Gustavo Bertei defeated Coastal's Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) 6-3, 7-6 in Flight 3 Singles while Campbell's Marc Sifre defeated Freddy Petrilli, 6-4, 6-3.
In Flight 4 Singles, Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) defeated Chris Beach from The Citadel, 6-1, 7-5 and Campbell's Viktor Taune defeated UNCW's Henrique Meloni, 6-4, 6-3.
Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) defeated UNCW's Brian Ford, 6-4, 7-6 and Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) defeated Alexandre Duval 7-6, 7-5.
In Doubles action, Piacentini and Holland from UNCW defeated Campbell's Delarue and Sifre, 8-2. Coastal's Mellis and Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) defeated Citadel's Diaz and Jose, 8-2.
Flight B Doubles got victories from the senior team of Caress and Taylor when they defeated Citadel's Petrilli and Beach, 8-4 and Redding and Tvetkov who defeated Campbell's Duval and Taune, 8-4. Also picking up a win was UNCW's Bertei and Meloni over Campbell's Starkov and Sebastian Thesleff, 8-2.
The weather caused significant delays in several matches Thursday which will be made up on Friday before the start of the second day.
"I'm pleased with the way we played today, especially in doubles," Head Coach Chris Powers mentioned. "We had a great start against some good competition and I hope to carry the momentum into tomorrow."
