The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team had a champion and two runners-up in the Charleston Southern Fall Tournament Sept. 24-25.
In Flight B, sophomore Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Marys College) defeated teammate and classmate Ryan Vrba (Algonquin, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs) 6-2, 6-1 to win the bracket. Taylor defeated Taavo Roos of Armstrong Atlantic in the semifinals 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile, Vrba beat Neil Hammel of High Point in the semis 6-0, 7-5.
Sophomore Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeths Hospital) lost his first match, but made it all the way to the consolation finals, falling to Hector Rincon of Presbyterian 2-6, 6-0, 7-6. Redding won two matches on his way to the finals. Freshman David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) defeated David Perren of High Point 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, but fell in the second round 7-6, 6-3.
Mellis and Redding advanced to the finals in the Doubles B bracket, defeating Rincon and Zach Glanker of Presbyterian 8-1 in the first round.
"This weekend was a good first step for our young team," Coastal head mens tennis coach Chris Powers said. "We played well and even pulled off a few upsets. Our doubles needs work, but well get back to tough practices this week in preparation for the tournament at UNC Wilmington."
Coastal will play in the UNC Wilmington Fall Invitational Oct. 1-2.
