Men's Tennis Has Successful First Day at UNC Wilmington Invitational

The Chanticleers will send through five flights for the second day of tournament action.

Coastal Carolina University men's tennis went 5-1 on the opening day (Sept. 11) of the UNC Wilmington RBC Wealth Management College Invitational.

"We were very successful today," Head Coach Chris Powers said. "We are rolling along, and I am happy about our good start to the Invitational."

The Chanticleers went a perfect 2-0 in both doubles flights. Flight A's Coastal Carolina team of Dmitry Vlaskin and Matt Gordon defeated Virginia Tech's Corrado Tocci and Trpirmi Kojundzic. In a tiebreaking B Flight doubles match, Dorian Sovic and Alex Funkhauser defeated Betto Mondini and Larbi Lamzouri of Campbell, 9-8.

In singles, Vlaskin rallied after losing the opening set to get a three-set victory over Martin Schishkov of Georgia State 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 to move on in the A flight. In the B flight, Funkhauser handled Virginia Tech's Jonathan Pine in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. The C flight was a hard fought match for Sovic who fell to Modini of Campbell, 6-4, 6-2. In D flight, Gordon got the victory over East Carolina's Eli Khoury, 6-0, 6-2.

The five out of six flights that won today will continue through the second round of tournament play tomorrow (Sept. 12).
