Men's Tennis Wins Two Titles and Goes 20-8 as a Team This Weekend

WILMINGTON, N.C., and HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina Men's Tennis team went 20-8 as a team this weekend and won two titles at the UNC Wilmington Landfall Invitational and the Coker College Fall Tournament.  Senior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) defeated UNC Wilmington’s Gustavo Bertei, 4-6, 6-2, 10-9 to win the Men's Singles Navy Flight.  Fellow senior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary’s College) won the Gold Flight’s consolation bracket on Saturday after defeating Victor Lage of Mount Olive, 6-1, 6-4 and Stephen Whitwell of East Carolina, 6-5, 7-6.    In Flight A Doubles, Quibell and Taylor defeated Stephen Whitwell and Aleksey Kochetov from East Carolina, 8-4 to win the Men’s Flight A Doubles Consolation bracket.  In Flight B Doubles,  Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital) and Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) lost to Gustavo Bereti and Henrique Meloni of UNC Wilmington, 8-3.    At the Coker College Fall Tournament, Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) lost to Barton’s Brent Ching, 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals of the Flight A Singles.  David Mellis defeated Declan Berndt in the semis, 6-1, 6-0 but fell to Ching in the finals, 7-6, 7-5. Sophomore Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) defeated Coker’s James Schroeder, 6-1, 6-1 but lost to Matthew Jackman of Barton, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 in the finals of the Flight B Singles.    In doubles play, Mellis and Tzvetkov defeated Barton’s Jenner and Moscow, 8-6 to win the Flight A Doubles.  While Withers and Barton’s Scott Reddick defeated Methodist’s Jarrod Bogard and Andrew Freeman, 8-1 but lost to Coker’s Jackman and Martel in the finals, 8-4.    “All-in-all it was a solid overall team performance, Quibell’s off-season preparation really paid off today,” Head Coach Chris Powers said.  “However, we’re not their physically yet but I’m fortunate to have players ready to commit to have a successful fall season.  The opportunity to play a couple of team matches on September 22, should be a great motivator for the team on and off the court this week.”
