Men's Tennis goes 13-1 in Second Day of Tournament Play
WILMINGTON, N.C. and HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina Men's Tennis Team went 13-1 Saturday between the UNC Wilmington Landfall Invitational and the Coker College Fall Tournament. Senior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) defeated UNC Chapel Hill's Tristan Heinrich to advance to the finals of the Navy Flight tomorrow, 6-4, 6-1. Senior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) won the Gold Flight's consolation bracket after defeating Victor Lage of Mount Olive, 6-1, 6-4 and Stephen Whitwell of East Carolina, 6-4, 7-6.
In Flight A Doubles, Quibell and Taylor defeated Elon's Kevin Colin and Kevin Beard, 8-4 moving them into the finals in the consolation bracket tomorrow. Seniors Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) defeated UNC Wilmington's Ben Kotwall and Todd Floy, 8-2 which moves them into the Flight B Doubles finals tomorrow.
At the Coker College Fall Tournament, junior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) defeated Andres Centeno from St. Andrews Presbyterian, 6-1, 6-0 to move him into Sunday's semifinals. Freshman Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) defeated Richard Jenner from Barton, 6-4, 6-1 and Methodist's Chris Fletcher, 7-6, 6-4 and sophomore Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty) defeated St. Andrews Presbyterians Cory Fleck, 6-0, 6-1 and Cokers Danny Nash, 6-0, 6-0.
In Flight A Doubles action, Mellis and Tzvetkov defeated Chris Fletcher and Mike Layton from Methodist, 8-3 then lost to Bartons Brent Ching and Brandon Simmons, 8-4. Due to tiebreaker rules, Mellis and Tzvetkov will move into tomorrows finals bracket. In Flight B Doubles, Withers, who is playing with Bartons Scott Reddick defeated Cokers James Schroeder and Tyson Thompson, 8-1.
"We are setting our goals higher this season and the guys have done quite well at both tournaments so far this weekend, Head Coach Chris Powers commented. We had some solid victories across the board and Im pleased with our play. Overall, we are on the right track for the season but can still improve mentally and physically in the upcoming week.
The Chanticleers are back in action tomorrow at both the Landfall Invitational and the Coker Fall Tournament for final bracket play.
