Wilmington, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina Men's Tennis team opened up its season in the UNC Wilmington Landfall Tennis Invitational Friday.
In A Doubles, seniors Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) and Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) were defeated by UNC Chapel Hill's Jeff Schroder and Tristan Heinrich, 8-5. In B Doubles, seniors Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) defeated Elon's Alex Garrett and Kyle Smialek, 8-6, moving them into the semi-final bracket beginning tomorrow morning.
In Singles action, UNC Chapel Hill's David Stone defeated Simon Taylor, 6-2, 6-7, 11-9 in the gold bracket. In the Navy Bracket, Taylor's teammate Elliot Quibell defeated Mount Olive's Guillherme Serra, 6-3,6-4, which places him into the semi-final bracket taking place tomorrow.
"Simon played a tough match, he really showed his senior status today. I give him full credit for battling against a quality opponent," Head Coach Chris Powers said. "I think that if Elliott plays like he did today in the remaining matches of the tournament, he has a good shot at winning the navy bracket. I think that Caress and Redding also have a very good shot at winning their doubles bracket if they continue with the strong play. I'm hoping that the entire team finishes strong here at the Landfall Invitational and that those competing in the Coker Tournament also represent the team well tomorrow."
The Chanticleers return to action tomorrow in the second day of the Landfall Invitational and in the Coker College Fall Tournament in Hartsville, S.C.
