Men's Tennis Trio Picks Up Big South Honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team had a trio of players picked up Big South honors at the 2009 Big South Conference men's tennis awards banquet held at McBryde Hall on the campus of Winthrop University Thursday, April 15. Senior German Perez and junior Ernesto Ramos earned All-Conference honors in singles and doubles play, while junior Dmitry Vlaskin was named to the Big South Academic All-Conference team, the league announced this evening.

Perez assembled an 11-8 record in singles play in his first season with the Chanticleers, including a 4-2 record in the Big South. Perez was a solid No. 1 and No. 2 player for the Chanticleers playing to a 5-0 record in the final five matches of the season on court two and won three of his first four matches on court one. Ramos has been instrumental for the Chanticleers this season with a 15-5 singles record, which includes two six-match win streaks. Perez and Ramos have put together a 14-4 record at No. 1 doubles, starting the season 7-0, which earned the duo a No. 68 ranking by collegetennisonline.com (Feb. 21) and Coastal Carolina's first-ever national ranking under Head Coach Chris Powers.

The All-Conference singles honors are the first for the Chanticleers since Arnaud Caffin collected four-straight awards from 2000-2003. The last doubles All-Conference honor the Chants received was in 2007, when junior Plamen Tzvetkov and Richard Redding teamed up to go 16-7.

Vlaskin earned a 14-6 singles record and partnered with Tzvetkov for a 14-4 record at No. 2 doubles this season. Vlaskin started the season 5-0 in singles play and after a 3-1 start in doubles, Vlaskin and Tzvetkov went on a nine-match win streak in doubles play. Along with Vlaskin's on the court success, he has excelled in the classroom and carries a 3.867 grade-point average and is majoring in psychology.

The Chanticleers were seeded third after a 15-5 overall record and a 4-2 Big South mark and will be looking for their first-ever Big South title this weekend starting with No. 6 UNC Asheville Thursday, April 16 in Rock Hill, S.C. In their only meeting of the season, Coastal Carolina edged Asheville 4-3 in the regular season meeting at Asheville (March 30). The match is slated to get underway at 2 p.m.
