Men's Tennis Rallies to Defeat Binghamton 4-3 on Senior Day

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team came from behind to get a 4-3 victory over Binghamton Wednesday, April 8 at the BillyNicholsTennisCenter. Seniors Joseph Withers and German Perez each came away with a singles victory on Senior Day to help the Chanticleers to the win. Coastal Carolina improves to 14-5 overall and remain 3-2 in the Big South.
Binghamton stole to the doubles point with the first two victories on court two and court three. Falling in the first doubles match was Withers and sophomore John Hairston, who dropped an 8-5 decision to Evan Algier and Andreas Danielsson. At No. 2, juniors Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov were defeated 8-6 by Binghamton's Alexandre Haggai and Arnav Jain. On court one, Perez and junior Ernesto Ramos saw their three-match winning streak come to an end as Gilebert Wong and Sven Vloedgraven defeated Coastal Carolina's top duo 8-6.
Coastal Carolina quickly squared the match in singles play with Perez cruising past Jain on court two 6-1, 6-3. The Chants would take the lead minutes later after sophomore Dorian Sovic earned his 12th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Danielsson. The Bearcats evened the match score at 2-2 as Vloedgraven defeated Ramos 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot. After going down in the first set, Withers rallied back to win Coastal Carolina's third point of the day with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Rafael Rodrigues on court six. With the Chants up 3-2, Vlaskin was making a comeback on court four after dropping the first set and pulled off the 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win as Haggai's final shot went long to solidify the Chanticleers 14th victory of the season. With the match in hand, Tzvetkov and Wong finished off singles play on court three with Wong getting the 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 decision over Tzvetkov.
"We had to fight our way back into this match today," Head Coach Chris Powers commented. "I am really proud of the way we charged back midway through singles. Withers and Perez stood out on Senior Day and now we need to focus on a big match with a very good Liberty squad on Saturday."
Coastal Carolina travels to Lynchburg, Va., for their final regular season match of the season when it faces Big South Conference rival Liberty Saturday, April 11 at the Sport Racket. Matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
