Kusuda and Whalen Garner Conference Honors

Charlotte, N.C. - Yusuke Kusuda of the Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team has been named the Choice Hotels Men’s Tennis Big South Player of the Week, while Hunter Whalen has been named the Crons Brand Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Kusuda, a senior from Chikushino, Japan, went 2-0 at No. 2 singles last week, helping Coastal Carolina defeat Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville. Against the Blue Hose, he provided the match-clinching point with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over William O’Connell. He also teamed up with Ted Nilsson at No. 3 doubles for an 8-3 win over Presbyterian’s tandem. In the match against UNC Asheville, he provided the Chanticleers with a crucial singles point when he defeated Matt Waissen, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. This is Kusuda’s first Player of the Week honor of this season.
Whalen, playing at No. 6, provided Coastal Carolina a key singles points last week by defeating UNC Asvheville’s Brett Landau, 6-4, 6-4. The honor marks Whalen’s first Conference honor of his career, and the first Freshman of the Week nod for a Coastal player this season.
The Chants hit the road for two away matches later this week, traveling to Longwood on Friday for a 1 p.m. match, then to East Carolina for a noon match on Saturday.
