CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team continued to struggle with injuries and illnesses in a loss to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday 6-1. Senior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) picked up the only win for the Chanticleers.
Arkansas-Little Rock picked up the doubles point after sweeping all three Chanticleer teams. In the number one spot the team of Dinko Halachev and German Perez defeated the Coastal duo of Taylor and Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) 8-2. At number two doubles, Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) fell to Edson Abrao and Igor Nikitin 8-6 while David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) were defeated by Mark Ballock and Yohann Chartron 8-3 in the third doubles spot.
Tzvetkov fell to Abrao at number one singles 6-4, 7-6 while Taylor picked up Coastal's only win on the day against Ballock 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Arkansas-Little Rock's Gerard Galindo took down Redding 6-3, 6-2 as did Juan Carlos Nunez against Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) 6-1, 6-4. The Chanticleers had to forfeit number five and six singles after injury and illness prohibited any remaining Chanticleers to compete. Perez and Chartron picked up the two wins.
"We are weathering a storm right now," Head Coach Chris Powers mentioned. "I can't question the guys who went out there and battled hard. They didn't quit with things got difficult and that gets my ultimate respect."
The Chanticleers look to get healthy as they prepare for Big South rival Winthrop on Saturday. That match is at Noon on Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
