CONWAY, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team picked up its 12th win after defeating Presbyterian 5-1 on Monday morning in Hilton Head, S.C.
Coastal won the doubles point despite Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) losing at number one doubles to Presbyterian's Aaron Chapman and Matthew Martin 8-4. Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) picked up their 10th doubles win against Andrew Lee and Zach Glankler 8-2 while Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) and David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) defeated Mark Cannatelli and Patrick Fediuk 8-0.
Tzvetkov was handed his first loss in the number one singles spot in three sets to Champman 3-6, 6-1, 5-10 while all five remaining Chants got wins. Mellis defeated Martin 6-4, 6-2, Taylor took town Oliver in a intense three-set match 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 and Redding got a victory over Michael Nicol 6-4, 6-1. Caress continued on the winning track, winning his fifth match in a row against Fediuk 6-3, 6-3. Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) did not finish his match against Presbyterian's Andrew Lee but won the first set 6-3 and was down 2-3 in the second.
The Chanticleers also ended the night with another win, improving the team to 13-2 on the season after defeating Bucknell 6-1.
In singles action, Tzvetkov defeated Ira Reibeisen 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 at the number one position and Taylor picked up a win against Ryan Sandburg 6-2, 6-3. At number three singles, Redding got a win against Ben Young 6-1, 6-0 while Caress picked up his sixth straight win after taking down Zach Hascoe in a thrilling match that went three sets. Caress fell in the first set 2-6 but rallied back to get the victory 6-3, 10-7 in the last two. Withers' match also went to three sets but fell to Bucknell's Jonathan Brenner 6-2, 3-6, 7-10. Quibell competed in his first singles match since Feb. 17th against Campbell. Quibell defeated Daniel Bednarek in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 10-4.
In doubles action, the number one team of Tzvetkov and Redding took down Brenner and Sandburg 8-3 while Caress and Taylor squeaked by Reibeisen and Hascoe 9-8. Mellis and Quibell sealed the deal for CCU after beating Young and Sidharth Makkar 8-2.
The Chanticleers, who are well on their way to a record-breaking season, went 3-0 in Hilton Head this past week. They will return to action when they host East Carolina on Thursday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m. at Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
