Men's Tennis Sweeps Ferris State 7-0; Improves to 10-1

CONWAY, S.C. – With a 7-0 sweep of Ferris State Thursday, March 9 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center, the Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team returned to its winning ways, moving to 10-1 on the season. The Chanticleers overwhelmed the Bulldogs in doubles action, tallying victories on all three courts and never dropping a set in singles play in a dominating performance this afternoon.

 

“It was great to get the health of the team back in order,” Head Coach Chris Powers commented. ”I thought we executed well on a hot day and it was a good win for us.”

 

Juniors Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) and Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) flew past Kyle Revall and Brian Anderson 8-3 at No. 2, while senior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty))and sophomore John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) defeated Jack Swan and Justin Hermes 8-3 on court three. Senior German Perez (Valencia, Spain/Collegio Helios (UALR)) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) got an 8-4 victory over Lewis Degeneault and Ahmet Demir at No. 1.

 

In singles, Tzvetkov made his first appearance of the season at the No. 2 spot and got a 6-1, 6-3 win over Demir. Perez, Ramos, Vlaskin and sophomore Dorian Sovic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazisa (UALR)) earned straight-set victories in their matches. Withers won the first set on court six 6-1 and pulled ahead 4-2 in the second set before Hermes retired.

 

Coastal Carolina continues its five-match homestand when it hosts Wake Forest Thursday, March 12 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center at 4 p.m. The Demon Deacons feature the nation’s No. 1-ranked doubles pair in Cory Parr and Steve Forman.

 

“Thursday’s match against Wake Forest is a wonderful challenge,” Powers continued. “I hope we can put our best tennis on the court that afternoon.”
