Men's Tennis Defeats James Madison 5-2

The Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team (6-5) earned a 5-2 victory over James Madison University March 7 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers swept the doubles and won four straight set singles matches.

In the first doubles, junior Florentin Meynie (Nanterre, France) and sophomore Richard Redding (Winscombe, England) defeated David Emery and Jesse Tarr 8-6. Sophomore Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England) and classmate Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio) bested Brian Clay and Carlin Campbell 8-6. Sophomore Ryan Vrba (Algonquin, Ill.) and freshman Ryan Weisband (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made it a sweep with an 8-4 win over Bob Allensworth and Don Davidson.

At number-two singles, Taylor defeated Tarr 6-4, 6-4, while Redding beat Allensworth by matching 6-2 counts at number-three singles. Caress beat Campbell 6-3, 6-3 and junior Brian Dowis (Yorktown, Va.) bested Davidson 6-3, 6-2.

"I’m proud of our team performance against a solid James Madison squad," Coastal head coach Chris Powers said. "Our doubles has turned the corner and we are starting to play confident tennis."

Coastal travels to Elon, N.C., to face Elon University Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m.
