Mens Tennis Nine-Match Win Streak Ends in 4-3 Loss to UNC Wilmington
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team had its nine-match win streak come to end Thursday, March 5 as UNC Wilmington edged out the Chanticleers 4-3 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The nine consecutive victories for the Chants is the best start in program history.
The Chanticleers started strong, winning their ninth doubles point of the season sweeping through UNC Wilmington’s pairs. On court one, senior German Perez and junior Ernesto Ramos overwhelmed Michael Pereira and Kinshuk Sharma 8-2. Senior Joseph Withers and sophomore John Hairston cruised to an 8-2 victory over Gustavo Bertei and Ryan Ybarra at No. 3. Juniors Plamen Tzvetkov and Dmitry Vlaskin earned an 8-5 win over the Seahawks’ No. 2 duo.
Heading into singles play up 1-0, the Chanticleers looked poised to grab their 10th victory of the season going ahead early on all courts. The Seahawks had another thing in mind as they went up 1-0 in four of the six singles matches. The first Chanticleers to get ousted were Perez on court one, who fell 6-3, 6-4 to Bertei and Vlaskin at the No. 2 slot, who lost 6-4, 6-0 to Pereira. Tzvetkov won the first set of his match 6-3, but could not fend off UNCW’s Sharma at No. 3, who grabbed the next two sets 6-3, 6-0. Head Coach Chris Powers had to make some adjustments with sophomore Dorian Sovic out of the lineup due to illness. Slotted into the No. 6 spot for the first time this season was sophomore Carlo Checchia, who dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to UNC Wilmington’s Alex Wetherrell. With four singles matches under their belt, UNCW clinched the victory, but matches on courts three and five were still going on. Withers defeated Ybarra 7-6, 7-6 at No. 5, while Ramos played to a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 victory on court three.
“This isn’t a heartbreaking loss,” Powers continued. “We have fought hard all season and we fought hard today. We have some tough matches coming up and I look forward to taking it to building on what we have accomplished so far.”
