MEN'S TENNIS CONTINUES CONFERENCE PLAY VERSUS LIBERTY, THEN TAKE ON NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL
The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team will continue its conference play and home play as it takes on Liberty on March 6 at 2:30 p.m. The Chanticleers will then take on North Carolina Central two days later on March 8 at 3:30 p.m. The Chants are coming off of their first home loss of season and a seven match win streak snapped to Boston College, 4-3. The Chanticleers earned Head Coach Chris Powers his 70th win against UNC Asheville, 6-1.

Flames at a Glance: Liberty has posted a 3-5 record with all of their wins coming from the home court. The Flames have also lost to Campbell, Eastern Carolina and No. 1 Virginia. Liberty has a .625 win percentage in doubles and a .542 win percentage in singles.
Series Record: The Chants lead the all-time series with the Flames 5-4. Last season, the Chants defeated the Flames, 6-1 last season at Liberty. Coastal has posted a 6-1 record on the home court against Liberty, with their only loss coming in 2004 season, 3-4.
NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL EAGLES

Eagles at a Glance: This season, the Eagles have posted a 4-2 record, defeating Winston-Salem State and Shaw. The Eagles will play two matches before traveling to Conway as they take on UNC Asheville at home on March 5, then travel to Florida A&M in the MEAC Roundup Tournament on March 7.
Series Record: This will be the first time the Chanticleers have faced the Eagles in their history. This will be the first time the Chants will take on an independent opponent this season. The Chants will take on Longwood later this season.
COASTAL SUFFERS SETBACK FROM BOSTON COLLEGE
The Chanticleers seven-match win streak was snapped by Boston College in a tight 4-3 match on March 6 at home. The Chanticleers began with the No. 1 spot of juniors Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham falling to No. 21 nationally ranked Thomas Nolan and Erik Kreutzer, 8-3. In the No. 2 position, senior Ernesto Ramos and junior Alex Funkhouser tied up doubles by defeating Billy Grokenberger and Jonathan Schroeder, 8-5. The doubles pair improved 7-0 in the doubles play this season. The Chants No. 3 team of senior duo of Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov battled toe-to-toe but could not pull out a win to get the doubles point over Akash Muppidi and Adam Davison, 8-6. Things started to look up for the Chants as they took a 2-1 lead in singles with the No. 4 spot of Tzvetkov defeating Alex Skinner 6-3, 6-3 and the No. 3 position of Vlaskin overcoming Kreutzer, 6-2, 6-3. The Eagles took back the lead with No. 1 player Nolan routing Gordon, 6-3, 6-3 and Brian Locklear defeating Billingham 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot. Junior Dorian Sovic battled after losing the first set the to beat Schroeder, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 5 position, tying the match up at three all. It all came down to Ramos and No. 76 singles player in the nation Muppidi in the No. 2 position in the final match. Ramos took the first set, but fell in the final two, 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.
chants tops unc asheville, GOES 2-0 IN BIG SOUTH
The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team won its seventh straight match on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.The Chanticleers opened the day with victories in No. 2 and 3 doubles, earning the doubles points. The No. 2 team of senior Ernesto Ramos and junior Alex Funkhouser improved their record to 6-0 as they defeated Nathan White and Jonas Brobeck, 8-5. In singles, the Chanticleers took five of the six matches, with the only setback in the No. 4 spot. Ramos defeated Nonnenbroich at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4. Funkhouser overpowered Brobeck 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, improving to 8-0 on the season. In No. 5 singles, Tzvetkov continued his winning ways as he earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rees.
POWERS GETS 70TH WIN OVER UNC ASHEVILLE
Head Coach Chris Powers earned his 70th win with the Chanticleers against UNC Asheville, 6-1. Powers also surpassed Don Mack, who had 63 wins for the most successful coach in Coastal Carolina recorded history earlier this season.
TZVETKOV PICKED AS BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Men's tennis senior Plamen Tzvetkov has been named the Big South Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday, Feb. 23 by the league office. Tzvetkov turned things around after starting the season 0-4 by picking up victories in singles and doubles action last week against Charlotte and Conference foe Gardner-Webb. In the match against the 49ers, Tzvetkov defeated Krystof Kwasniewicz, 7-5, 6-4 in No. 5 singles, helping solidify the 5-2 Coastal win on Feb. 20. The Herts, United Kingdom native defeated Gardner-Webb's Roman Piftor (7-6 (7-5), 6-3) last Sunday providing the game-winning point for the Chants. In No. 3 doubles play, Tzvetkov and Dmitry Vlaskin defeated their GWU opponents, helping the Chanticleers sweep the doubles point.
CHANTICLEERS DEFEAT CHARLOTTE AND OPEN BIG SOUTH PLAY WITH WIN OVER GARDNER-WEBB
Coastal Carolina men's tennis had another 2-0 week by winning at Charlotte, 5-2, then opening Big South play at Gardner-Webb with a 5-2 win. At Charlotte, the Chanticleers took the doubles point and picked up wins in No. 1, 3, 4, 5 singles. Plamen Tzvetkov picked up the match-clinching point with a win of Krystof Kwasniewicz 7-5, 6-4. At Gardner-Webb the Chants swept the double point and earned singles victories in the No. 3, 4, 5, 6 positions, with No .2 Ernesto Ramos grabbing the game-clinching win over Andrew Veeder 7-6, (7-4), 6-4.
DOUBLES PLAY THRIVING
The Chanticleers doubles play has been thriving in the early part of the season as they has on lost doubles point twice this season in the only losses this season. The No. 1 doubles team of Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham have posted a 5-3 record and. Since being paired up against Campbell, Alex Funkhouser and Ernesto Ramos have had a perfect 7-0 record.

Coastal has looked to their newcomers to step into leadership roles as well as their play to start the season. Transfer junior Matt Gordon was voted as co-captain to help lead the team along side Dmitry Vlaskin. Gordon was the first, first-year player to be selected in that role. Gordon also stepped up his play by taking over the No. 1 singles, posting a 3-3 record and a 9-5 record overall. Gordon has also been a force with other newcomer Peter Billingham in the No. 1 doubles. Along with Gordon, Billingham transfered from Cowley Junior College and enrolled in Coastal for the spring semester. Billingham and Gordon have accumulated a 6-3 record in No. 1 doubles play. Billingham has also been successful in No. 6 singles, with a 2-5 record. Alex Funkhouser is perhaps had the most successful in the start of the season, by registering a 8-0 record in singles play and 8-1 in No. 2 doubles. Funkhouser named big south player of the week
Men's tennis junior Alex Funkhouser was been selected as the Big South Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. Funkhouser led the way for the Chanticleers as he picked up four victories in singles and doubles play against Mercer and Wofford. At Mercer, Funkhouser supplied the game-winning point in No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Victor Dias. He also paired up with Ernesto Ramos in No. 2 doubles to win 8-5. In the win over Wofford, Funkhouser defeated Alan Donald, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 position of singles, and at the No. 2 doubles spot, Funkhouser and Ramos won the match 8-3. Coastal handed Mercer its first loss of the season and snapped Wofford's 14-match home win streak this past week. The Winchester, Va. native has started the season with 5-0 record in singles and is on a four-match win streak in doubles.
CHANTICLEERS PLAY SPOILER
Coastal was the spoiler with both wins at Mercer on Wed., Feb. 10 and Wofford on Thurs., Feb. 11. In their first match of the week, the Chanticleers defeated the Bears 4-3, and handed them their first loss of the season. Alex Funkhouser grabbed the game winning point in the No. 4 seed 6-4, 6-4, over Victor Dias. For the second match of the week, Coastal snapped a 14-match home win streak for Wofford, 4-3. Dmitry Vlaskin picked up the game-winning point by defeating Drew Superstein, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles. In both matches, the Chanticleers continued to dominate in doubles by winning all but one match.
COASTAL HAS A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY DAY ON THE CLAY
Coastal not only raised money for the Red Cross, but also got a 5-2 win over Campbell on it annual "Community Day on the Clay" at the Prestwick Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Chanticleer started the day by sweeping the doubles point. The Chanticleers took the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 spots to clinch the win. Matt Gordon defeated Beto Mondini 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot, and Ernesto Ramos won over Loukas Wallaart 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. Alex Funkhouser continued his three match unbeaten streak by defeating David Clavera 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot, and Peter Billingham defeated Josep Baro 6-4, 6-1 to end the day. In singles the No. 1 spot of Plamen Tzvetkov lost to Larbi Lamzouri in a tough match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and in the No. 5 spot Dmitry Vlaskin fell to Ondrej Kralik 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
CHANTS OPEN SEASON 1-1
Coastal opened the season 1-1 the past week, with a loss at #59 UNC Wilmington, 6-1, and a win over The Citadel 4-3. Alex Funkhouser had a successful start as he earned wins against UNCW, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 and The Citadel, 7-6, 6-1 in the number four spot. Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham also got their first wins as Chanticleers. Gordon clinched the final point against The Citadel, winning against David Orces 6-2, 6-2.
CHANTS PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL
The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team was picked to finish second in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll by the league's head coaches, annouced by the conference Tuesday, Jan. 12. The preseason pick is the highest under the helm of Head Coach Chris Powers. The defending Big South Conference champion Radford received three first-place votes and 42 out of a possible 49 points to repeat in 2010. Coastal was a close second, finishing with one first-place vote and 41 points. Winthrop was pick to finish third with 39 points, ahead of Liberty, which received 26 points. Gardner-Webb was picked fifth with 21 points, followed by UNC Asheville (17) and Presbyterian (10).
LEADING THE WAY
Senior Dmitry Vlaskin and junior Matt Gordon have been selected as the 2010 team captains. Vlaskin has been part of the Chanticleers for three years, while Gordon is the first transfer selected as captain.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Joining the 2009 Chanticleers are juniors Alex Funkhouser, Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham. Funkhouser was part of the Old Dominion team that finished the season 19-16 and 18-13 team in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Gordon was selected as All-Northeast First Team at Fairleigh Dickinson. Billingham was two-time All-American at Cowley.
That's right! The 2009 Coastal Carolina men's tennis team has no freshmen listed on its roster. Three transfers, juniors Alex Funkhouser, Matt Gordon, and Peter Billingham, are all newcomers to the squad.
IT'S ALL ACADEMIC
Coastal Carolina received its 10th straight ITA All-Academic Team selection in 2009. In order to be considered for the award, teams must have a 3.2 GPA or higher. Senior German Perez, juniors Ernesto Ramos, Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov, and sophomore Dorian Sovic were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, which requires student-athletes to have at least a 3.5 GPA.
THE FALL IN A NUTSHELL
The Chanticleers completed fall play with a 52-32 record.
Coastal Carolina Double Day:
The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team topped Francis Marion with a 5-2 win followed by a convincing 7-0 win at the Coastal Carolina Doubleheader Day. To begin the day, the Chanticleers secured the doubles point by sweeping the Patriots in all three slots. In singles, Chants Matt Gordon, Alex Funkhouser, Dmitry Vlaskin and Dorian Sovic all picked up wins.
The Coastal Carolina men's tennis doubles team of Dorian Sovic and Alex Funkhouser won the Flight B doubles title in the UNC Wilmington RBC Invitational today (Sept. 13). Sovic and Funkhouser defeated Virginia Tech's Jonathan Pine and Zachary Pine, 8-6 in the championship match. Matt Gordon also had a successful tournament by finishing third in Flight D singles.
Southern Intercollegiate Championships:
The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team competed at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on September 18-20, hosted by Georgia. Due to the frequent rain, the tournament was cancelled for the last day of the matches.
Ramos plowed through four rounds to win the flight A-2. In the final round, Ramos defeated Gokay Celik of Delaware, 6-3, 6-2.In the singles flight A-1, Matt Gordon and Alex Funkhouser made it to the finals. In the Men's doubles A-flight, Tzvetkov/Vlaskin made it to the quarterfinals.
ITA REGIONAL: For the first time in school history, the men's tennis team put two singles players and one doubles team through three rounds of the ITA Carolinas Regional on Oct. 15-17, taking place in Chapel Hill, N.C. In singles, Gordon and Funkhouser made it to the 16th round of the 128-player main draw. The doubles team of Gordon and Ramos made a run, losing right before the quarterfinals. Three other Chanticleers: Dorian Sovic, Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov, were all accepted into the main draw, but lost in the first round.
