BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team (6-3, 0-1 Big South) won its non-conference match against Gardner-Webb (2-8) 4-3 on Saturday, March 4.

The number one singles match saw sophomore David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) fall to Roberto Vasques 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). CCU junior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) defeated Taylor Ferrier in the second singles match 6-2, 6-3. Junior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen's Mary College) won the third singles match over Brad Clinard 6-0, 6-3. After dropping the fourth singles match, Coastal junior Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) topped Kim Ellis 6-2, 6-3 in the fifth singles match. Senior Brian Dowis (Yorktown, Va./York) dropped the sixth and final singles match to Kern Phillips 6-2, 6-1.

The Chanticleers claimed the doubles point by defeating all three GWU doubles teams. At the first seed, the Chants Caress/Taylor defeated Ferrier/Phillip 8-1. In the second doubles seeding Redding/Quibell defeated Clinard/Ellis 9-8 (7-2). The third doubles seed also was for Coastal as Dowis/Mellis downed Vasques/Veiga 8-3.

"This was a solid road win for the program, head coach Chris Powers commented. "We have some big matches before spring break. Our focus is to maintain our solid doubles play and push things on the singles courts. We are getting closer to our overall potential and I'm starting to see the winning spirit we need to have a special season."

The Chants weekend travel ends in Gaffney, S.C., as CCU takes on Limestone on Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m.
