Men's Tennis Sweeps Richmond, 7-0

RICHMOND, VA. -- Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team defeated Richmond 7-0 Friday, Feb. 29 at Westhampton Tennis Complex, marking the Chanticleers' first sweep since defeating Winston-Salem State Feb. 9 and their fourth of the season.

The Chants (6-6) took the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) topped Drew Crank and Michael Sommer 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) beat Chris Louis and David Berry 8-3 in the No. 3 slot. Richmond's (0-7) only win of the day came at No. 2 doubles as Doug Banker and William Minter defeated senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201) 8-4.

Coastal swept the singles competition. Vlaskin had a 6-1, 6-3 win over Banker at No. 1 singles, while Ramos defeated Louis 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot. It took Mellis three sets to beat Sommer in the No. 3 slot as Mellis won 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Tzvetkov came away with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sami Belakhlef at No. 4 singles. Withers beat Minter 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 slot, while freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rafael Arana at No. 6 singles.

Coastal returns to action Saturday, March 1 at East Carolina. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
