Charlotte, N.C. - Jabor Al-Mutawa of the Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team has been named the Big South Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played Feb. 17-23, the league announced today. This award is his second weekly honor of the season and first Freshman of the Week nod.
Al-Mutawa went 3-0 last week against Appalachian State and Richmond. In singles play, he secured a pair of victories playing in the No. 5 flight. Al-Mutawa beat the Mountaineers' Jack Madocks 6-3, 7-5, before knocking off Richmond's Canyon Teague 6-4, 7-6, to clinch the match-winning point. In doubles play, he teamed with Ted Nilsson at No. 2 to top Richmond's team of Alex Hahn and Teague. Al-Mutawa and Nilsson were in action against ASU when the point was called.
To date, Al-Mutawa holds a 4-5 singles record playing primarily at No. 5 and a 3-4 doubles record playing alongside Nilsson.
Al-Mutawa and the Chanticleers will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Durham, N.C., to take on #15 Duke at 2:30 p.m.
Note: Junior Philippe Tsangaridis has risen in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles rankings from 109 to 67. Last week Tsangaridis defeated Sebastien King of Appalachian State 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and recorded an 8-3 doubles victory over Richmond's top pair of Ethan Dunbar and Jacob Dunbar.
