Men's Tennis Gets 4-3 Win Over Georgia Southern in Battle of the Unbeatens

More Information:

STATESBORO, GA. – It was a battle of the undefeated and the Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team came out with a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern (3-1) Friday, Feb. 13 at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The Chanticleers remain unbeaten at 6-0 this year, matching the best start in program history.

"This was a great match," Head Coach Chris Powers commented. "We showed a lot of heart and determination against a solid team. However, we haven’t reached our full potential, but it was great to get the win today."

Coastal Carolina claimed the doubles point as senior German Perez (Valencia, Spain/Collegio Helios (UALR) and junior Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) defeated Joris De Weerdt and Matt Sands 8-5 at No. 1. Juniors Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) picked up an 8-3 victory over Gregory Bekkers and Philip Prins at the No. 2 spot. Senior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and sophomore John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) dropped their first doubles match of the season, falling 8-4 to Justin Flynn and Jayraj Jadeja.

The Chanticleers dropped three of the first four singles matches, falling at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 slots, to give the Eagles a 3-1 edge. Tzvetkov won his match in straight sets, defeating Flynn 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Dorian Sovic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazisa (UALR)) pushed his match to three sets, but surrendered his first contest of the season to Alain Garrido 7-5, 2-6, 2-6 at No. 4. With Georgia Southern holding a 3-2 edge and both teams fighting for the win, it was no surprise the final two matches went to three sets. Ramos battled with Bekker at No.2 and eventually prevailed with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win to steal another point for Coastal Carolina, evening the score at 3-3. Shortly after, Withers registered the match-clinching victory, defeating Edio Castenhal 7-5, 4-6, 6-0.

The Chanticleers will open league play Sunday, Feb. 15, when they host Gardner-Webb at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The match slated to begin at 1 p.m.
