This Week on the Courts
The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team (2-1) gets back to work this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 11 as it hosts Francis Marion at 9 a.m. and Coker College at 3 p.m. at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center in Conway, S.C. It's in the Series
Coastal is 1-2 lifetime against Francis Marion. The Chants were defeated by the Patriots 4-3 last season. CCU is a perfect 3-0 all-time against Coker having defeated them in the last meeting 6-1 in 2002.
Last Time Out
On Feb. 4, Coastal defeated Mount Olive in the first match of the day 4-1. Coming away with singles victories for the Chanticleers were Elliot Quibell, Simon Taylor, Andy Caress and Richard Redding. Singles matches were only played due to weather issues that forced a change of venue from the Riverfront Tennis Center to the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
In the second match of the day the Chants defeated Methodist 5-1. David Mellis, Quibell, Taylor, Caress and Redding were the victors for Coastal. Again only singles matches were played due to weather issues.
Undefeated and Unblemished
Three singles matches into the season the Chants have three men's tennis players that have yet to taste defeat. Juniors Andy Caress and Elliot Quibell are both a perfect 3-0 this season on the singles courts. And junior Simon Taylor, after a strong weekend, is 2-0 on the year.
Coastal Is Picked Seventh in the Big South Preseason Poll
Coastal Carolina's tennis team was picked seventh in the 2006 Big South's preseason poll. Winthrop is the preseason picked to win the conference. Coastal returns seven letter winners including senior Brian Dowis and junior Simon Taylor to led the team this season.
Dowis Named First Team Academic All District
CCU's Brian Dowis was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All District III Men's at Large First Team in the summer of 2005. Dowis, a mathematics major, had a grade point average of 3.922 and was also named the Big South's Conferences Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was the sixth Coastal men's tennis player to be named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the third in the last four years.
