The Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team defeated Mount Olive College 4-3 and fell to Augusta State University 4-3 in the "Community Day at the Clay" at the Riverfront Tennis Club in Conway, S.C.
After Augusta State defeated Mount Olive 7-0, the Chanticleers faced Mount Olive in the second match. The Trojans took the doubles point, although sophomore Richard Redding (Winscombe, England) and junior Florentin Meynie (Nanterre, France) defeated Camilo Sabogal and Guilherme Serro 8-6. Coastal then took four of six singles matches, including a third-set tiebreak win from freshman David Mellis (London, England). He defeated Rafael Bustos 4-6, 6-3, 10-3. Sophomore Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England) defeated Fernando Crisosto 6-1, 6-4. Meynie beat Felipe Olarte 6-2, 6-4 and at the six spot, sophomore Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio) beat Aldo Barba 6-1, 6-2.
In the last match of the day, Augusta State took all three doubles matches against the Chants, but Coastal won the top three singles matches. Mellis beat Raul Intriago 7-6, 6-3, Taylor defeated Victor Meza 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 and Meynie beat Harry Hahn 6-1, 6-2.
During the day, the men’s tennis team raised close to $500 to give to UNICEF to help the victims of the December tsunami in Asia.
"I was impressed by the fact that we fought extremely hard," Coastal head coach Chris Powers said. "We have a lot of work to do but I can’t question the character of our young team. If we can improve on the doubles court, then I can see success in the future."
Coastal is back on the court Tuesday, Feb. 8, at The Citadel. The match starts at 2 p.m.
