CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team used a solid team effort to sweep past Coker 7-0 Tuesday, Feb, 3 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The Chanticleers premiered two doubles pairs and brushed off some cool weather conditions for the win.
"It is always good to get the win," Head Coach Chris Powers commented. "We still need to improve on attacking the ball, but I think we are moving in the right direction."
Senior Joseph Withers and sophomore John Hairston earned the No. 1 doubles spot and handily defeated Coker's Esteban Teran and Juan Vallejo-Gonzalez 8-1. At the No. 2 position, junior Ernesto Ramos and sophomore Carlo Checchia blanked Evan Shreiner and Andrew Chinnes 8-0. Making his first appearance in Coastal Carolina's doubles lineup was sophomore Dorian Sovic, who teamed up with junior Plamen Tzvetkov to take an 8-2 victory over Coker's Jeremiah Dye and Tyler Edwards.
The Chanticleers overwhelmed Coker in singles play. At the No. 6 singles position, Hairston quickly defeated Edwards 6-0, 6-1 to take the first singles match of the day and his first singles victory of the season. Sovic followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chinnes at No. 4. Ramos played through some lengthy rallies but came out ahead of Vallejo-Gonzalez 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot to clinch the win for the Chants as they went ahead 4-0. Tzvetkov got a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 to remain undefeated on the season in singles play.
The two longest matches of the day came at No. 2 and No. 5. Vlaskin played through a tough first set with Coker's No. 2 Dye, before grabbing the first set 6-4. Dye continued to fight but Vlaskin's powerful service game proved to be too much for Dye, as the Chanticleer would claim the 6-2 win in the second set. In No. 5 singles, Withers and Coker's Teran fought through a series of unforced errors but a final one by Terran would cost him the match as Withers earned the 6-2, 6-2 victory, pushing the Chants to their first sweep of the season.
The Chants will test out another surface Saturday, Feb. 7 when they host Community Day on the Clay.
"I know the guys are looking forward to hitting on the clay this weekend as Community Day on the Clay is always one of the highlights of our schedule for us," Powers concluded.
Coastal Carolina will play Wofford at 9 a.m. and Mount Olive at 4 p.m. The event will take place at Prestwick Tennis Center and the Chants will be raising funds for the Grand Strand Food Bank.
