Jan. 29 - Gardner Webb, 11 a.m.
The Coastal Carolina mens tennis team (0-0) opens the 2005 season Jan. 29 with a match against Gardner-Webb University. The match begins at 11 a.m., at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center on the Coastal Carolina campus.SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB: Gardner-Webb (0-2) opened its season with a 5-1 loss to Elon and a 7-0 loss to nationally-ranked North Carolina State. Daniel Abrahao had the lone win against the Phoenix, defeating John Garnett 6-0, 6-2. Gardner-Webb fell to Belmont 4-1 in the first round of last years Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
HEAD COACH CHRIS POWERS: Chris Powers (Ferrum 97) is in his first season as the head coach of the mens team after serving four seasons as an assistant for both the Coastal mens and womens teams. He helped guide the 2000 womens squad to a Big South championship and an NCAA appearance. Powers coached two seasons at Virginia Tech, where he helped the Hokie women to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Conference championships.
FALL UPDATE: Coastal made great strides during the fall season, where the team went a combined 42-39 in singles play. Sophomore Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England) was 8-3 in singles and won his flight at the Charleston Southern Fall Tournament. Coastal also had numerous semifinal and final appearances in the four fall tournaments.
CO-CAPTAINS: Junior Brian Dowis (Yorktown, Va.) and sophomore Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio) will serve as the co-captains for the Coastal mens tennis team this season.
UP NEXT: Coastal hosts Mount Olive College and Augusta State University Feb. 5 in the first annual "Community Day at the Clay" event at the Riverfront Tennis Club in Conway, S.C. The Chants face Mount Olive at 1 p.m. and Augusta State at 5 p.m.
