Charlotte, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team has been voted first in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll of the league's head coaches, the conference announced Wednesday. The Chanticleers received five first-place votes to earn Coastal Carolina's first-ever preseason No. 1 ranking.

"There's an old saying that every team starts the year in the same place," said head coach Chris Powers. "We look at it like every team is also in last place. We have a ton of work to do in order to reach our goals and there are a lot of good teams in the league that will contend for the championship. I think this team has potential and I hope that we will have taken some big steps by the time we open up our league schedule in March."

The Chanticleers enter the 2014 season as the defending Big South champions. The Chants went 8-0 in conference play last year, earning the conference's regular-season title before defeating Presbyterian in the Big South championship.

Coastal finished with 76 points in the polling after receiving five first-place votes, four second-place votes and one third-place vote.

Campbell followed in second place with 60 points, just ahead of Winthrop who claimed two first-place votes and 57 points. Liberty landed the No. 4 slot with 51 points, while Presbyterian College's 49 points was good for fifth. In sixth with 48 points was Radford, followed by Gardner-Webb with 26 points and UNC Asheville with 25 points. Longwood rounds out the poll in ninth place with 13 points.

Coastal started the 2014 season 0-1 after falling to #19 Wake Forest last Saturday. The Chants will look to rebound as they travel to UNC Greensboro this Friday, Jan. 17, at noon.
