Men's Tennis Tabbed Third In Big South Preseason Poll

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team was picked to finish in third place in the annual Big South Conference preseason poll as voted on by the league’s head coaches. 

The Chanticleers tallied one first-place vote and a total of 35 points following a 2010 season that saw Coastal finish with a 14-8 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Big South en route to a third place finish. 

Matt Gordon earned All-Big South Conference plaudits last season in singles and returns for his senior season. 

Winthrop earned three first-place votes and 42 total points and is the preseason favorite to win the Big South.  Not far behind, Radford garnered 41 points and two first-place votes and was picked to finish in second place. 

Liberty, which received 34 points and one first place vote, was picked behind the Chants in fourth place.  Gardner-Webb landed in the No. 5 slot with 20 points, while UNC Asheville’s 15 points was good for sixth.  Rounding out the poll was Presbyterian College, which earned nine points.

The 2011 Big South men’s tennis season begins this Thursday, Jan. 13, with Winthrop at William & Mary.  The first Conference match-up will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 9 as Gardner-Webb will host Presbyterian College.  The Big South Men’s Tennis Conference Championship is slated for Thursday-Saturday, April 21-23 on the campus of Winthrop University.

Coastal opens the 2011 season Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. when the Chants host Union from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
