CONWAY - Coming off its first NCAA postseason appearance in program history, the Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team is set to open its season on Saturday at #19 Wake Forest. The defending Big South Champions will be led once again by head coach Chris Powers, who is entering his ninth season at the helm of the men’s tennis program.

“It is great that we get to jump right into it with a top 20 opponent,” said Powers. “Wake Forest is going to be as talented as any team we play this spring and I know the guys are excited to compete. We certainly welcome this opportunity.”

The Chanticleers enter the 2014 spring campaign coming off of the program’s historically best season of 2013. Last year the Chants finished with a 15-6 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. After claiming the Big South’s regular season title, the Chants defeated Presbyterian in the conference’s championship match to earn the program’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Chants bowed out in the first round to Duke, but it did not diminish what the team had accomplished throughout the season.

The 2014 team will feature six returners, including seniors Leo Christofides and Ted Nilsson, juniors Mo Hookaylo and Garik Yedigarian and sophomores Stefan Jakubov and Hunter Whalen

Among the newcomers are freshmen Jabor Al-Mutawa and Renan Samed, as well as sophomore transfer Rick Timmerman (Stony Brook) and junior transfer Philippe Tsangaridis (Alabama).

Besides Wake Forest, the Chants are slated to face two other teams this season who were given preseason rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Coastal will host #44 UNC Wilmington on February 1, and will travel to #38 Virginia Tech on February 9.

The Chanticleers will play their home-opener against South Carolina State at 1 p.m. on January 25, at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
