Cary, N.C. - Junior Philippe Tsangaridis led the Chanticleer men's tennis team on the first day of the ITA Carolina Regional on Thursday, logging first and second round wins over North Carolina State and North Carolina, respectively, to reach the round of 32.
Tsangaridis managed to fight off Nick Horton of NC State in the first set of his first match, 7-6 (3), before cruising in the second set 6-2 to advance to a second-round matchup against North Carolina's Stuart Depaolo. Tsangaridis made relatively easy work of Depaolo, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. He will now face fifth-seeded Cameron Silverman of Elon on Friday and has a chance to become the first player under head coach Chris Powers' tenure to reach the round of 16.
Garik Yedigarian advanced to the second round after defeating Robert Lindgren of Elon in a third-set tiebreaker. After taking the first set 6-3, and dropping the second 3-6, Yedigarian held on to win the third 7-6 (5). The junior would then go on to face Beck Bond of North Carolina State in the round of 64 where he fell 7-5, 6-1.
Leo Christofides closed out the first round victories for the Chants, downing UNC's Chad Hoskins in straight sets 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2). Christofides would not make it out of the round of 64 however, falling to Aws Laarbi of Wake Forest 6-2, 6-1.
Singles play at the ITA Carolina Regional will continue on Friday with the round-of-32 matches. The men's doubles matches will also commence on Friday. Check back to GoCCUSports.com for complete results.
