Nilsson Leads Chanticleers on First Day of UVA Fall Classic

Charlottesville, Va. - Senior Ted Nilsson of the Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team led the Chanticleers on the first day of the University of Virginia Fall Classic, advancing to the semifinals of the Gold singles flight and the Red doubles flight with partner Garik Yedigarian

The Bunkeflostrand, Sweden, native first dispatched Norfolk State’s Peter Pello in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6, before winning a three-set match over Jimmy Davis of George Mason, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals. Nilsson will have a chance to advance to the championship match of the Gold flight on Saturday when he faces Jonny Cornish of Virginia. 

In the Red doubles flight, Nilsson and Yedigarian won a tight 8-7 match over East Tennessee State’s pair of Huertas del Pino/Da Silva. The CCU pair will square off against Yablon/Quazzo of Princeton in the flight’s semifinals on Saturday. 

In the Blue singles flight, Yedigarian won his first match over James Madison’s Rob Stirling 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Harrison Richmond of UVA in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0. 

Philippe Tsangarides advanced to the second round of the Orange singles flight, winning 6-1, 7-5 in the first round over James Madison’s Sabastian Salinas. Tsangarides then lost his second round bout against David Biosca of ETSU 6-2, 6-4. 

Coastal also saw singles wins from Renan Samed, Hunter Whalen, each of whom won their opening round matches before falling in the second round. 

In doubles play, Tsangarides and Christofides picked up a first round win the Black flight over Longwood’s Kelleher/Fudge to advance to the semifinals where they will take on Pubon/Knox of ETSU.
