CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team advanced two singles players and two doubles pairs in the first day of competition at the University of Virginia Fall Classic.

Yusuke Kusuda and Garik Yedigarian had an impressive first day against tough singles competition as they gave themselves a chance for a championship appearance in their respective flights.

Kusuda faced Alon Faiman of College of Charleston in the round of eight after having a first round bye. After dropping the first set 3-6, Kusuda rallied to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-4.

Yedigarian downed Rob Stirling of JMU 6-2, 6-4 in the first round before defeating Liberty's Siim Tuus 6-2, 6-3.

In the doubles flights, the Coastal pair of Hunter Whalen and Sam Barr won their opening match against the Morgan State pair of Duwane Thomas and Richard 8-4.

Yedigarian and Matias Di Pasquale also recorded an opening round victory over Binghamton's Robin Lesage and Eliott Hureau.

"This is a strong tournament and I was happy with our overall play," said head coach Chris Powers. "This weekend is all about improving for the regional championships coming up so every main draw and back draw match has important meaning this weekend."

All Coastal players will return to action on Saturday for day two of the tournament.
