Faria Leads Coastal at South Carolina Intercollegiate Championship
BELTON, S.C. - Luiz Faria highlighted the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team's participation in the South Carolina Intercollegiate Championship this past weekend, winning both the singles championship and Vara doubles flight to finish the weekend with a perfect 7-0 record.
Faria advanced to the singles championship with wins against players from The Citadel, South Carolina and Winthrop. The junior then squared off against South Carolina's Wood Belton in the final, defeating the Gamecock 6-3, 6-3.
Faria teamed up with freshman Harry Cohen in doubles, and the duo went 3-0 with a victory over a Furman pairing in the flight championship.
Talic and Cori-Gamero each picked up a trio of wins in the Well singles draw. The two faced each other in the final match of the flight, with Talic coming out on top, 6-4, 7-5.
Talic and Boulay paired in the Demars doubles flight, going 3-1 while playing through the consolation draw.
As a team the Chants posted a 22-9 overall record on the weekend.
"This weekend was another great experience for this young team," said assistant coach Sebastian Schneider. "It will continue to be a work in progress until the conference tournament in April, but it's great to see their development from week to week. It was exciting to have Luiz lead the squad, and Harry set a great example by stepping up and claiming a doubles title together with him. The overall take from this weekend is we are a team of workers, and I believe it will make us hard to beat when the spring season comes."
Coastal holds an intra-squad scrimmage Oct. 6-7 at the Stevens Tennis Complex before wrapping up its fall schedule Oct. 12-15 at the ITA Carolina Regional.
