BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team clinched a tie for second-place in the Big South with a 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex.

Coastal won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. After dropping the first two doubles matches, Coastal reeled off four straight singles wins to take the match. John Karle topped Brendan Dempsey 6-3, 7-6 to tie the match at two apiece.

After dropping the opening set, Garik Yedigarian defeated Korhan Ates 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 followed by Yusuke Kusuda clinching the match with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Roman Piftor. Matias Di Pasquale earned the final point for Coastal (6-7, 7-6, 6-4).

“I am very proud of the way we responded after losing five of six first sets,” said head coach Chris Powers. “We could have gone down quietly, but we fought back on almost every court.”

Coastal finished the regular season with a 13-5 overall record while posting a 5-2 mark in the Big South. The tie for second is the best finish since the 1996 season while the second-place Big South finish is the best under Powers.

Coastal will compete in the Big South Tournament beginning on Thursday in Asheville, N.C. The Chanticleers will face Liberty on Thursday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m.
