Lynchburg, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches, remained unbeaten in Big South play and clinched at least a share of the regular season conference title with a 5-2 win at Liberty on Sunday afternoon.

The Chanticleers (11-5, 7-0) will be able to clinch the regular season championship outright if they win their final match of the season against Winthrop, or Campbell drops one of its two remaining matches.

The Chants started the day slow, ceding the doubles point to the Flames.

Matias Di Pasquale and Garik Yedigarian, Coastal’s No. 1 pair, fell 8-5 to Shea Thomas and Egon Samaai of Liberty. Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur then handed an 8-6 loss to John Karle and Leo Christofides at No. 2 to seal the point for the Flames. Ted Nilsson and Yusuke Kusuda picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Siim Tuus and Guillem Secanell.

Trailing 1-0, the Chants rebounded in singles play, winning five of the six singles matches.

Di Pasquale, playing at No. 5, cruised past Samaai in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Yedigarian followed at No. 3, downing Azuero 6-0, 6-3 to give Coastal a 2-1 lead. Hunter Whalen gave the Chants a two-point cushion after downing Secanell at No. 6, 7-6, 6-3.

Tuss brought the Flames back within one after defeating Christofides at No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Nilsson capped the match for Chants, earning the fourth point at No. 4 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Segur. Kusuda claimed the final point of the match for Coastal, as the Chants’ No. 1 downed Thomas 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“This was another classic battle between Big South rivals,” said Coastal head coach Chris Powers. “We didn’t panic after losing the doubles point, and took our game to them in singles. Liberty is a very well coached team and we were fortunate to earn this win today.”

The Chanticleers will close out the regular season portion of their schedule next Sunday, April 14, when they host Winthrop for a 1 p.m. match.
