CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team won its seventh straight match and helped Head Coach Chris Powers earn his 70th win with its victory against UNC Asheville 6-1 on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The Chants are now 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big South Conference, while UNC Asheville fell to 2-5 and 0-1 in their opening conference match. With the win, Powers is now the most successful men's tennis coach in Chanticleer recorded history.
“It was great to get the win on the home court today,” Powers said. “I thought we fed off the crowd well and showed a competitive grit today. We will feel good about this one tonight, but we will be back to work tomorrow.”
The Chanticleers opened the day with victories in No. 2 and 3 doubles, earning the doubles points. The No. 2 team of senior Ernesto Ramos and junior Alex Funkhouser improved their record to 6-0 as they defeated Nathan White and Jonas Brobeck, 8-5. The No. 3 senior doubles pair of Plamen Tzvetkov and Dmitry Vlaskin defeated UNCA's Thomas Rees and Adrian Langeard, 8-3. The No. 1 doubles team from UNC Asheville of Matthew Waissen and Jonas Brobeck won a tough match over juniors Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham, 9-8.
In singles, the Chanticleers took five of the six matches, with the only setback in the No. 4 spot. In No. 1 singles, Gordon routed Waissen, 6-3, 6-4, while Ramos defeated Nonnenbroich at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4. Funkhouser overpowered Brobeck 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, improving to 8-0 on the season. In No. 5 singles, Tzvetkov continued his winning ways as he earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rees. Junior Dorian Sovic battled hard in the No. 6 spot overcoming White in a tight match, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.
Coastal will continue its play on Wednesday, March 3 at 1 p.m. against Atlantic Coast Conference-foe Boston College in Conway, S.C.
