CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team defeated Richmond 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
Coastal completed its third shutout of the year while improving to 5-1 on the season. Richmond drops to 4-6 on the year after falling to Longwood Saturday morning.
The Chanticleers won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Yusuke Kusuda and Matias Di Pasquale won 8-2 followed by John Karle and Sam Barr securing the point with an 8-5 win playing in the third slot.
Coastal only needed three singles wins to secure the match. Garik Yedigarian defeated Pablo Arana de Uriate in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Playing in the No. 2 position, Leo Christofides won 6-1, 6-1 over Aaron Wicker. Sam Barr followed with a 6-2, 7-6 win to secure Coastal's fifth win of the year.
"I give Richmond a lot of credit for its intensity and fight," said head coach Chris Powers. "They are a well-coached team who will beat a lot of teams this year."
"We open conference play next weekend...next week is definitely an important week of practice."
Coastal will host conference foe Liberty in the first Conference match of the year on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. Before playing the Flames, Coastal will travel to Durham, N.C., on Friday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m. to face North Carolina Central.
