MYTLE BEACH, S.C.-Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team not only raised money for charity, but their level of play, defeating Campbell 5-2 at "Community Day on the Clay" at the Prestwick Tennis Club on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Chanticleers improve to 2-1, as Campbell fell to 1-2 on the season.  

 

"I am really pleased with the response from the tennis community," Powers said. "We raised a good amount of money for the Red Cross, and the match was very competitive. We played very solid in doubles, but struggled in some places in singles. We need to get better, but the team desire is there to do something special."

 

Coastal started the day by sweeping doubles play, with the No. 1 team of Peter Billingham and Matt Gordon defeating Loukas Wallaart and Ondrej Kalik 8-4. Ernesto Ramos and Alex Funkhouser continued by beating Larbi Lamzouri and Josep Baro 8-3, and Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov finished with a win over Beto Mondini and David Clavera 8-2 in the No. 3 spot.

 

The Chanticleers took the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 spots to clinch the win. Gordon defeated Mondini 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot, and Ramos won over Wallaart 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. Funkhouser continued his three match unbeaten streak by defeating Clavera 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot, and Billingham defeated Baro 6-4, 6-1 to end the day. In singles the No. 1 spot of Tzvetkov lost to Lamzouri in a tough match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and in the No. 5 spot Vlaskin fell to Kralik 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

 

The Chanticleers will travel to Augusta, Ga. to take on Mercer on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.
