Men's Tennis Blanked by #46 Virginia Tech

The Chants' 2013 home-opener will take place Friday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. against USC Upstate.

Blacksburg, Va. - Coastal Carolina men's tennis dropped to 1-2 after losing 7-0 to the 46th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday. 

Virginia Tech took the doubles point after quickly winning at the number two and one spots. Matias Di Pasquale and Garik Yedigarian suffered an 8-1 loss to Tech's Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira at No. 2, while Yusuke Kusuda and Ted Nilsson lost 8-3 to fifteenth-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini of the Hokies. 

The doubles point had already been sealed by the time Coastal saw their lone victory of the day. Leo Christofides and John Karle, playing at No. 3, defeated Tech's Mauricio Antun and Marko Lovrinovic 8-6. 

The Hokies then swept the Chants in singles play, taking all six singles matches.    

Yusuke Kusuda lost at No. 1 to #56 Amerigo Contini 6-3, 6-0; #29 Andreas Bjerrehus won at No. 2 over Ted Nilsson 6-4, 7-5; Garik Yedigarian was dispatched in straight sets at No. 3 by Lucas Oliveira 6-4, 6-2; Leo Christofides, playing at No. 4, was topped by Hunter Koontz 6-1, 6-0; Matias Di Pasquale took the first set at No. 5 before Aaron Gomez rallied back to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-3; and Hunter Whalen lost in straight sets to Mauricio Antun 6-3, 6-0 at No.6. 

"We knew playing indoors was going to make for a challenging weekend, but I was proud of the way we competed today," head coach Chris Powers said. "We definitely have a lot of work to do before our first home match this Friday. I don't think we have seen our best tennis yet and I'm looking forward to an intense week of practice this week." 

The Chants will entertain USC Upstate in their 2013 home-opener, set to take place Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
