CONWAY - Coastal Carolina's Shawn McLawswas named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Nov. 24. The defender led the Chanticleers to a pair of shutouts in the opening two rounds of the 2013 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
McLaws, who was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year earlier this month, anchored the Chanticleers' defensive efforts in a 2-0 win over Atlantic Sun champions East Tennessee State in the Tournament's First Round at the CCU Soccer Field on Thursday, Nov. 21. McLaws, who played center back in the contest, held ETSU's leading scorer Emmanuel Wilson without a shot attempt.
The Edmond, Okla., native then helped the Chanticleers to a 1-nil upset of 13th-seeded Charlotte in the Second Round on Sunday, Nov. 24. After Ricky Garbanzostaked the Chanticleers a one-goal lead in the opening five minutes, McLaws and company made the score stand over the remainder of the contest by holding the 49er attack at bay. Charlotte finished the match with 12 shots with most coming from long range. McLaws also headed away several dangerous Charlotte crosses into the box.
McLaws and the Chanticleers travel west to take on Cal in the Round of 16 on Sunday, Dec. 1. It is Coastal's second consecutive and third overall NCAA Tournament Third Round appearance.
