Nov. 22, 2013
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team was one of 270 teams to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year.
To qualify for the award, teams must post a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the calendar year. Coastal Carolina earned the honor for the fourth time since 2009 and 10th overall under head coach Shaun Docking.
The Chanticleers' 3.38 team GPA lead all Big South Conference members and tied the Crimson of Harvard for the 12th best among qualifying Division I institutions.
"Owning a team GPA above a 3.0 is an important standard of our program that our student-athletes strive for each season," said Docking. "With the plethora of academic resources and support on the Coastal Carolina campus, I look for us to continue to receive this honor each year."
In addition to being named to both the All-Big South first team and all-tournament team senior Justin Portillowas also named to the 2013 Big South All-Academic team. Portillo holds a 3.37 GPA as a recreation and sport management major.
The Coastal Carolina women's team also earned NSCAA All-Academic recognition, making Coastal Carolina one of only 186 schools across all divisions to have both its men's and women's program recognized.
