CONWAY - After claiming a pair of NCAA Tournament wins to make its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2003, the Coastal Carolina soccer team placed two members on national teams of the week. Midfielder Pedro Ribeiro was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, while defender Uchenna Uzo earned national recognition from College Soccer News.
Ribeiro turned in his first multi-goal game of the season against Elon in the Chanticleers' First Round match. The Brazilian scored each of his two goals in the form of long-range blasts from outside the 18-yard box. Ribeiro nearly added his third goal of the tournament against Wake Forest as he beat his defender inside the box; however, his shot attempt sailed just high of the goal. The goals were the first for Ribeiro in four career NCAA Tournament games.
Uzo was assigned arguably the toughest task in all of college soccer against Elon. The Nigerian was responsible for man-marking the nation's leading goal scorer in the Phoenix's Chris Thomas. Uzo shut down Thomas, who entered the match with 23 goals, allowing the All-American only a single shot attempt. Uzo then led the Chanticleer backline against Wake Forest's 16th-ranked attack, holding the Demon Deacons to a single goal. The sophomore also prevented Wake Forest's Sam Okoli, who ranks 28th in the NCAA with 11 goals, from finding the back of the net.
Ribeiro and Uzo represent the 12th and 13th national team of the week recipients for the Chanticleers this season.
Coastal Carolina travels to second-seeded Maryland for the Third Round matchup on Sunday, Nov. 25. Kickoff from the Terrapins' Ludwig Field is slated for 5 p.m. The match will be streamed online free of charge on TerpsTV.
